THE WINDMILL AS A HIVE
Culture and environment come together in an unusual project in Harplinge . The work will culminate in "BZZZ" International Sound Art Festival in July.
This Tuesday beekeepers, artists and musicians gathered for a workshop in Harplinge windmill. The mill is run by Julijana Nemeti and Mikael Ericsson, working together under the name Harp Art Lab. The gathering was the start of a project on bees, sounds and beekeeping, creating an artistic framework that will be presented as a part of the “Bzzz”-Festival this summer.
- We have invited the duo Softday, Mikael Fernström and Sean Taylor, as they have carried out a similar project in Ireland, says Mikael Ericsson.
Over a number of years, the Softday project "Song of bees " culminated in a concert at the monastery of Glenstal Abbey in 2013. The sound and music was based on scientific data from beekeepers.
- It is not possible to predict the outcome in Harplinge but perhaps Halland traditional musicians can help to create an interpretation of bee sounds, mused Mikael Fernström.
He is from Falkenberg, but living in Ireland since 1991 and works as a lecturer in interaction design at the University of Limerick. His colleague Sean Taylor - for the first time on a visit to Sweden - works at the Limerick School of Art and Design.
Together, they want to create an understanding of environmental issues and climate change. A previous project focused on water quality. But now they focus on bee colonies.
Why have you focused on your bees ?
- Beekeeping has collapsed in many parts of the world. The bees are dying from pesticides and diseases and this may eventually threaten human existence, says Mikael Fernström.
He plays a recording of the energetic hum of healthy bees and compares with the sounds low-key buzz of weaker bees. - But they do not communicate by sound but with touch and scent , he says.
The festival "Bzzz" takes place in Harp Art6 Lab, Harplinge, Sweden between 4th and 6th of July (exhibition period: July 4 - Aug 17 2014).
